Where to walk in every month of the year
Spread a network across England, Italy and Türkiye and something useful happens: there is no month without genuinely good walking. The English trails own the long days of summer; the Mediterranean owns spring and autumn; and winter belongs to the planners. Month by month, honestly:
Plan and book
The quiet season is when the good inns and the best guides get taken. Book the Coast to Coast now for June; sketch the year. (Cappadocia under snow is magical — for the well-equipped and adventurous only.)
Book the English classics
C2C accommodation on the popular stages sells out first — this is the month to lock it. Türkiye's spring windows start filling too.
Göbekli Tepe
Mild days in the southeast, the site without summer crowds, Şanlıurfa's food at its best. The thinking person's early-season trip.
The Lycian Way wakes up
Wildflowers, cool trails, a sea warming toward swimmable. Cappadocia's valleys turn green the same week. This is Türkiye's first great month.
Cappadocia — and England opens
Cappadocia at its greenest; the Coast to Coast season starts properly; the SWCP's shoulder weeks are quiet and lovely.
The Coast to Coast
The longest days of the English year over the Lakes, Dales and Moors. If the C2C is your walk, June is its month. SWCP before the school holidays is the connoisseur's alternative.
SWCP, north coasts
Sea breezes beat inland heat. Start early, swim often, eat the cream tea you earned. Türkiye's trails rest — this is not their month.
SWCP, booked ahead
Peak season on the English coast: harbour towns in full life, beds in full demand. Book ahead and it's glorious; wing it and it's car parks.
The Via Francigena
Grape harvest, golden light, Rome without the summer scrum. The Lycian Way reopens, and Walk + Sail season begins on the same coast.
The Lycian Way
The single best month in this guide: warm sea, cool trails, empty ruins. If you can only take one autumn week, spend it here.
Türkiye's long autumn
The Lycian coast and Göbekli Tepe stay properly walkable well into the month while northern Europe goes dark. The year's last great window.
Dream and gift
Give someone a walking year: the guidebook, the boots, the promise of a stage. Then start again at January, one trip wiser.
